Hello all,

I want to provide a brief update on our visit to Washington, D.C. and our meeting with three high-ranking officials at the USDA to discuss the almond pasteurization matter.

Cornucopia’s Codirector, Mark Kastel, and myself met for more than an hour with the three officials in the office of USDA Undersecretary Bruce Knight. The bulk of our discussion centered on almonds. Interestingly, we learned that half of all the comments coming into the Secretary’s office at this time are on almonds! People across the country are upset with the pasteurization plan and want the ability to again buy raw, untreated domestically grown almonds. We want to thank and congratulate all our collaborators on helping elicit such a strong response.

The Truth About Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, but when it is in an isolated and/or synthetic form, it is quite poorly absorbed and can actually adversely affect our health. According to one human study, 1500 mg (total) of isolated and/or synthetic vitamin C per day can cause iron deficiency and anemia.

Raw Food Diets – Types and Descriptions of Raw Foodism

There are many different types and descriptions of a Raw Foodist. Raw Foodism entails foods from all food groups allowed that’s uncooked, unprocessed, and less than 105 degrees.

Depending on a person’s lifestyle and experiences they may choose different types of raw food to be eaten. These can be based upon research, lifestyle, or religion. The below is a basic outline of the current Raw Food Diets available.

Instinctive eating: fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and meat–typically excludes dairy
Fruitarianism: fruit, nuts and seeds, and sometimes sprouted grains & legumes
Primal diet: fatty meats, dairy and vegetable juices
Raw Paleolithic Diet: meats, organ-meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts,seafood, eggs, honey - excludes raw dairy and grains
Wai diet: fruit, nuts, fish, and eggs
The Garden Diet: fruit, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, seeds, honey, Celtic sea salt, olive and flax seed oils
Raw veganism: fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts (usually includes grains and legumes)
Low-fat raw veganism: fruit, vegetables, limited amounts of nuts (if any)
Raw foodism: Food from all food groups (unheated or warmed to a temp less than 105 degrees)
Raw vegetarianism: fruit, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, dairy, eggs and honey
Sproutarian: one whose diet is predominantly sprouts.
Liquidarian: one who consumes only liquids/juices.
