The produce section of grocery stores is a foreign place full of strange food with weird names. Mention “Lychee” to an average person and you will get weird looks. It’s sad because this is the state of most of our society. The education of the actual food nature has provided us with has become unknown. It baffles me because I wonder - how did this happen?! We are in the information age of self-indulgence. We want things when we want them and want them to happen at our pleasure. We have forgotten self-awareness. Do yourself a favor - take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes and clear your mind. Slow down and re-orientate yourself.
Consuming a Raw Food Diet or on your journey to – your doing great things for your body. Nutrition for your body is vital but it’s also important to feed your mind & soul. Doing simple things like taking a few deep breaths during the day will help you relieve stress. It will help you understand that you’re not only doing great things for your body but your mind & soul as well. You’re one stop closer to nature and making a difference toward a healthier earth.

I ran across an amazing site that I thought was a really unique and wanted to share with you all. Many of us have piles of health books. It seems like they are being released every day and I can never keep up! Not only that - its expensive! I have a thirst for knowledge so it’s hard for me to say No when it comes to books. That is what I found this resource so neat.HealthBookSummaries.com is website that works with authors and publishers to release Nutrition & Health Books in .PDF(Adobe Acrobat) format. The great thing is… the service is free! Yes sounds too good to be true. The service is ad supported so you will see them on occasionally on the side of the .PDF. I don’t find them annoying because they are from health food companies like Organic Food Bar, Wellness Resources, Nutrex Hawaii, Vitacost, etc. Book Summaries are 15-pages long and can be printed. You can also get audio formats but that will run you $7.95/month. People live busy lives. Life is too rushed and its sad. Unfortunately its just a way of life for many. This way you can at least get some health information in a format you can fit around your schedule around. It’s a new site so I’m excited to see what comes of it.

I don’t receive commission from this or anything. I just thought I would share. I think it’s a unique concept and hope to see it grow. Enjoy.

Natural gray sea salts provide renewed energy, and at the same time gives higher resistance to infections and bacterial diseases. Natural Celtic Sea Salts, are the gentlest alkaline forming substance known. Furthermore, cereal grains, beans, roots or vegetables pickled or aged with salt (pickles, sauerkraut, or naturally fermented, starter-type bread), all become even better healing foods when prepared with unrefined natural salt. The Organic Health that can be obtained from Sea Salts has yet to be realized. The absence of sea salt in the daily diet greatly hampers absorption of the nutrition contained in grains and vegetables and leaves them unable to function as natural healing agents. natural Celtic Sea Salt is a living food, with its ionic and electrolytic properties profoundly anchored in its grounding crystals.

Natural Light Gray Sea Salts provide the most basic condiment as well as a staple food. They possess the power to rejuvenate the body’s biosystems, therefore, a powerful remedy for countless health problems. No pill supplementation can equal the wealth of minerals that natural Celtic Sea Salts supply, regardless of how rich or precisely that supplementation is formulated.

Clean, unrefined, and hand-harvested natural Celtic Sea Salt, used in the proper manner, has reversed many a “chronic illness” and restored wholeness in just a few days. Because of its complex beneficial minerals and bio-electronic power it offers countless health benefits: it balances alkalinity/acidity levels, restores good digestion, and relieves allergies and skin diseases. The daily use of these natural salts along with a whole-grain-based diet could greatly reduce toxins and prevent ill-health.

* Celtic Sea Salts are a prime condiment that stimulates salivation, helps to balance and replenishes all of the body’s electrolytes.
* It provides renewed energy
* It gives you a high resistance to infections and bacterial diseases
* It supplies all 82 vital trace minerals to promote optimum biological function and cellular maintenance.
* It balances alkaline/acid levels
* It restores good digestion
* The natural iodine in these salts protects against radiation, atomic fallout and many other pollutants.
* It can aid in relieving allergies and skin diseases
* And overall greatly reduces toxins and to help prevent ill-health
* Properly stored, salt keeps virtually indefinitely.

1. Top for taste
Many people buy organic food because they believe it tastes better than non-organic. This could be because organic fruit and vegetables tend to grow more slowly and have a lower water content, which may contribute to the fuller flavour some people experience. A poll in 2005 showed that quality and taste of food are important to more people than low prices.

2. It’s Healthy
On average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants. Organic milk is naturally higher in Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, Vitamin A (Beta Carotene) and certain other antioxidants than non-organic milk.

3. No nasty additives
Only 32 of the 290 food additives approved for use across the EU are permitted in organic food. Amongst the additives banned by the Soil Association are hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate which have been linked to health problems.

4. Avoids pesticides
The best way of reducing your exposure to potentially harmful pesticides is to eat organically grown food, where their use is avoided. Over 311 pesticides can be routinely used in non organic farming and residues are often present in non-organic food. Over 40% of all non-organic fruit, vegetables and bread tested in 2005 contained pesticides according to the Government’s Pesticide Residues Committee. The results for particular fruit and vegetables were much worse, e.g. chemicals were found in all oranges tested, 90% of bread, 72% of grapes, 95% pears.

5. GM-free
Genetically modified (GM) crops and ingredients are not allowed under organic standards. Over a million tonnes of GM crops are imported to feed non organic livestock that produce much, if not most, of the non organic pork, bacon, milk cheese and other dairy products in our supermarkets.

6. Reliance on drugs removed
Antibiotic additives routinely added to animal food to speed animal growth are linked with bacterial resistance in humans to the same or closely related antibiotics. Soil Association standards ban the routine use of antibiotics.

7. No hidden costs
Compare this with the £120m that tax payers fork out annually to pay for chemicals to be removed from drinking water, mainly as a result of the pesticides used in farming.

8. High standards
Organic food comes from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year. The standards for organic food are laid down in European law.

9. Care for animals
No system of farming has higher levels of animal welfare standards than organic farms working to Soil Association standards. Compassion in World Farming believes that the Soil Association’s welfare standards are leaders in the field. (Joyce d’Silva, Director, Compassion in World Farming.)

10. Good for wildlife and the environment
Overall organic farming supports more farmland wildlife than non-organic farming. The UK government has said that it is better for wildlife, causes lower pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide - the main global warming gas - and less dangerous wastes.
-SoilAssociation

The human race learned long ago that cooking meat before eating it would protect them from certain diseases. Since then this practice of cooking has grown to include all types of foods and is now considered an art. Very few meals are eaten which include raw elements, except for the leafy green salad.

One advantage of eating raw is that it brings Nature’s intentions into focus. When I speak of eating raw I am referring to fruit, nuts, and vegetables, which taste good to the majority of humankind in their basic simplicity direct from tree, bush or vine.

I realize it isn’t easy to simply abandon thousands of years of tradition and revert back to 100% raw food. Margaret Mead once said, “It is easier to change a man’s religion than to change his diet.” So to the point, there are 10 advantages to a diet of fresh, whole raw fruits, vegetables, and nuts, which may lead you to find a greater place for them in your diet.

1. Raw foods are better quality, therefore you eat less to satisfy your nutritional needs. The heat of cooking depletes vitamins, damages proteins and fats, and destroys enzymes which benefit digestion. As your percentage of raw foods increases you feel satisfied and have more energy on smaller meals because raw food has the best balance of water, nutrients, and fiber to meet your body’s needs.

2. Raw foods have more flavor than cooked foods so there is no need to add salt, sugar, spices, or other condiments that can irritate your digestion system or over stimulate other organs.

3. Raw foods take very little preparation so you spend less time in the kitchen. Even a child of 5 or 6 can prepare most items for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This gives children a sense of self-esteem and independence, not to mention the break it gives Mom or Dad.

4. When you are eating raw there’s little chance of burns, unless you’re in the middle of a forest fire or out in the sun too long. Just think! No burns to tongues, the roof of your mouth, or fingers, and many fewer house fires.

5. Cleaning up after a raw meal is a snap. No baked-on oils or crusty messes. And any inedible parts go directly to the compost pile.

6. Eating a diet of raw foods can reverse or stop the advance of many chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Remember, cooking creates free radicals, which are the major cause of cancer. When you lower the number of free radicals your cells are bombarded with, you lower your risk of cancer.

7. A raw food diet can protect you from acute diseases such as colds, flu, measles, etc. Raw foods maintain a healthy body and a healthy body will not become diseased.

8. As long as you combine raw food properly according to the rules of Natural Hygiene, you will soon reach a level where you no longer suffer from heartburn, gas, indigestion or constipation.

9. It is environmentally sound. With humanity on a diet of raw foods, the food industry would close up shop and take up organic gardening. This would save us enormous amounts of natural resources used to produce power for these industries. Nuclear power would be clearly unnecessary. And think of how many trees and oil reserves could be saved without the need for the paper and plastics used in packaging our processed foods. There would also be less carbon dioxide released in to the atmosphere when all the cooking stopped and more oxygen produced from all the new orchards and gardens, thus helping to reverse the Greenhouse Effect.

Whole raw organic maca (Botanical names: Lepidium meyenii and Lepidium peruvianum) powder is better than any extreme maca extract, monster maca or gelatinized maca (fiber removed). Whole raw organic maca powder contains all of the plant spirit, minerals and fiber. It is the way ancient cultures consumed their maca. Any additional juicing or processing will always result in a more refined less whole product. Raw Organic Maca is the Ancient Super Food of South America. The organic Maca root has been used in Peru since before the times of the ancient Incans. The maca plant is similar to a radish or turnip and it can have different hues of color on its skin including red, purple, yellow or cream and black. It has amazing properties and is becoming more well known of for its effectiveness in health challenges, including osteoporosis, male impotence, menopause, menstrual difficulties, chronic fatigue, and depression.

This raw maca is certifed organic and powerful in its therapeutic value. Many people usually take 1 to 2 tablespoons (1/2 oz or 1 oz). It comes in 2 sizes, 2.2 lbs (1 kilo, a big bag of maca, will last a long time) and also a smaller size, 1 lb

Maca is a vegetable root or tuber, related to the potato family, which grows ONLY in the high Andean plateaus of Peru at altitudes as high as 14,500 feet above sea level. Our maca is cultivated in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes and local inhabitants say that men and women who consume Maca as part of their daily diet are known to be very fertile and have mountains of energy. Its fertility and sexual enhancing effects are so popular that Maca is used by the locale as part of their daily diet. It is also used by them for improving their natural energy.

Maca is an adaptogen, Maca adapts to your body’s metabolism. It works with your body to repair what needs to be repaired so that an optimal and ideal level of health and energy is maintained at all times.

Use Raw Certified Organic Maca regularly in smoothies and other recipes. Raw Organic Maca is a great way of remineralizing your body. Maca is full of vitamins and minerals in the right combination and proportion that the body needs, so that the body can actually use them.

Maca may also significantly reduce morning sickness. As morning sickness is due to hormonal fluctuations, maca stabalizes the fluctuations.

Source: RawFoodNewsMagazine

Hello all,

I want to provide a brief update on our visit to Washington, D.C. and our meeting with three high-ranking officials at the USDA to discuss the almond pasteurization matter.

Cornucopia’s Codirector, Mark Kastel, and myself met for more than an hour with the three officials in the office of USDA Undersecretary Bruce Knight. The bulk of our discussion centered on almonds. Interestingly, we learned that half of all the comments coming into the Secretary’s office at this time are on almonds! People across the country are upset with the pasteurization plan and want the ability to again buy raw, untreated domestically grown almonds. We want to thank and congratulate all our collaborators on helping elicit such a strong response.

As you know, people have been mailing us individually signed proxy letters for us to hand-deliver to Washington. We used this meeting as an opportunity to hand over a stack of well over 1500 letters. It was an impressive moment, and we were told that now all these new contacts will have to be logged in with the thousands of previous public comments received on this issue (more letters continue coming into our offices which we will deliver again to the USDA in the near future—please encourage anyone who has not submitted a proxy yet to download one from the Cornucopia website).

We were asked why there was such a public outcry on this rule with the officials expressing their surprise and amazement at the level of public concern. We explained the diverse desires of consumers, the demands of product manufacturers, and the mounting negative impact of the rule on family farmers and organic farmers who are losing markets and income from the pasteurization plan.

We then offered a compromise proposal for USDA to consider, one that we believe can help resolve this situation. We suggested that USDA support a plan allowing for the sale of untreated American grown almonds with a warning label. The warning label serves two purposes: it allows for continued freedom of choice in the marketplace and it allows marketers the option of continuing to “pasture as” raw almonds.

Having a warning label is by no means our first choice but might be the only politically expedient option at this point in time and a number of growers and handlers that we have spoken to have supported this compromise position.

The warning label approach is something that is already done for other foods sold in the U.S., such as some fresh, unpasteurized fruit juices. We know that FDA would have to be involved with such a labeling action, but we fully believe that if USDA throws its weight behind the proposal (along with the thousands of consumers and commercial interests who would support this) that such an approach would likely gain approval at the FDA.

USDA officials also questioned us on a second and companion solution – a pasteurization exemption for organic almond growers. The organic sector has not been implicated in any of the past contamination problems associated with almonds . Organic growers have their own set of mandatory protocols and best management practices that are employed in their orchards which substantially lower the salmonella contamination risk. An exemption for these growers would greatly diminish the harm that is being caused to these farmers who are losing marketshare to imports. This might be a good fallback compromise position although we are afraid that it will leave many growers and consumers of conventional almonds disadvantaged.

Our proposed solution to the situation was not rejected, but was met with some expression of support. In fact, one of the participants described our meeting as “rather constructive.” We were asked to send the officials a formal letter outlining the specific remedy to the problem, which we have since done.

Clearly for this proposal to gather more support from USDA, it will have to be further discussed and approved of by others at Agency (((you can’t get much higher up than the folks we were talking to and the meeting was sanctioned by Knight))). I will say that I am encouraged by what we heard and how the offer was received.

We are going to ask those of you who have been working with us on this issue to give the process a little more time to play out, perhaps into mid-January before we move onto other steps, primarily legal. We made certain that the officials in this meeting knew that we are prepared to go to court and challenge the almond pasteurization rule over its many and unexpected adverse impacts should this compromise proposal be rejected. We tried to impress upon them that time was of the essence in crafting a compromise before going to court.

But that doesn’t mean we are going to sit around waiting for their decision. We have had lengthy additional talks with attorneys about a possible legal challenge, are continuing to network with other organizations around the country, we are gathering more information from farmers hurt by the rule and from retailers and product manufacturers who are shifting to untreated raw foreign almonds to meet consumer demand. We will also be talking with more members of Congress about this. Most of all, we want to keep the heat turned-up on the USDA and we are encouraging all of you to help with that.

Please continue sharing with us any information, thoughts, and/or questions that you think would be useful in this campaign. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Will Fantle

PS: Because the negotiations with the USDA are at a critical moment we would encourage you to reach out to your members, customers and network of friends and family asking them to download one of the proxy letters from the Cornucopia website and mail it back to us—if they have not already done so. I would like to see a steady stream of these letters delivered to the USDA every week or two until we are finished with the negotiations. Together, let’s keep the pressure on.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, but when it is in an isolated and/or synthetic form, it is quite poorly absorbed and can actually adversely affect our health. According to one human study, 1500 mg (total) of isolated and/or synthetic vitamin C per day can cause iron deficiency and anemia.

Most of the isolated and/or synthetic vitamin C consumed is unused by the body. What’s worse, it puts a negative strain on your liver and kidneys to excrete it, and it is quite acid forming in the body. If a vitamin C is an ingredient of a product, it is synthetic and/or isolated. If it is naturally contained in the ingredient, it is naturally occurring (as it is in our product)! Ascorbic Acid and Calcium Ascorbate are synthetic/isolated forms of Vitamin C. “Ester-C” has a few elements added back to an isolated vitamin C molecule and is therefore more absorbable than Ascorbic Acid or Calcium Ascorbate. However, Truly Natural Vitamin C has all of the naturally occurring elements synergistically present and bonded (including naturally occurring bioflavonoids) because it is 100% food (100% Acerola Cherry Powder). Other products sometimes give the illusion of being totally or partially whole food products, but in reality, they actually are not. There are many “Vitamin C with rose hips and acerola” type products out there. Every one of those products we have seen has a very small amount of rose hips and/or acerola (which are plants naturally high in absorbable vitamin C) with a whopping amount of synthetic and/or isolated Vitamin C! Vitamin C mixed with whole foods is not the same as vitamin C contained in whole foods. The superfoods added “on the side” are good for you, but not the main ingredients or the supplement as a whole! Get your Vitamin C the way nature truly intended!
